P+FC Horticultural Facilities

Commissioned by the NYC Department of Design and Construction, this 5,000 SF industrial building houses horticultural materials and equipment for the Garden. P+FC respected the modularity of the standard service bays required for equipment as well as the uniform depth of the existing buildings along the Garden edge and experimented with translucent and opaque industrial materials to celebrate the equally important but less glamorous functions of the Garden. A sub-grid of frame extensions step into the service yard and "through" a translucent plastic wall to support canopy for staff to work under that continues into the public area of the Garden. Exposed columns and beams support the two types of skin, roll-up doors, traveling cranes and a bridge linking a separate structure for storing and preparing exotic pesticides and fertilizers.
